Spring 2015 Smith Mountain Lake Residence Master Planning included retaining walls and grading to lower grades on a site with existing eroded and unfunctional slopes currently in turf. Retaining walls will frame a planting palette comprised of slow growing fescue, ornamental grasses, low evergreen groundcovers, masses of santolina and lavender and bank stabilizing shrubs to create a soft naturalistic scheme. Retaining walls will end in weathered boulder groupings to anchor spaces. Riverstone will line new swales to control and convey stormwater throughout the site in a beautiful way. To counter the sloping site, several vertical elements are being added to create human-scale framed zones which create functional use areas: parkway-style wood guardrail along curve of cart-path to lake also provides seating and a pergola/swing structure facing commanding views of the lake. Riverbirch Trees, evergreen shrubs and a stone-lined swale will follow the graceful lines of the cart-path to tie together upper and lower use areas.
